We are seeking a new 3D Character Rigger and Animator to join the team here at Thud Media starting mid April. We have a couple of projects that require someone with experience in getting game ready characters rigged and brought to life …animated! – the target being Unity in this case and the work being across in-game action and narrative content.

The perfect artist for this role will have worked on released games full of character work (cartoon aesthetic) and be technically proficient in rigging best practise for game engine implementation. This is a great opportunity to be a part of our busy, close-knit team working remotely – with potential to join us in our central Cardiff studio in the future!

Responsibilities and duties

  • Rigging and skinning characters to meet animation requirements
  • Animation for character movement sets
  • Animation for narrative sequences
  • Implement and test animation in engine
  • Revise and optimise existing content
  • Troubleshoot and fix rig issues, collect artistic feedback and fine tune rig behaviour
  • Gather ad-hoc reference to assist in animation and present range of options
  • Take on technical challenges, work with initiative and to schedule milestones


  • Rigging demo reel that showcases technical ability
  • Demonstrated ability to create animation for video games (reel and/or game demo)
  • * Solid foundation in fundamentals, human/animal movement, character and emotion
  • * Adaptable, able to work in different styles and for platform requirements
  • In-depth knowledge and technical proficiency in using Autodesk Maya
  • Can demonstrate a clear knowledge of current art pipelines for character creation
  • Knowledge of Unity’s character tools for rig performance testing
  • Texturing ability – Photoshop/Substance
  • Have worked at least 1 shipped title with Unity
  • Team development experience, good communication skills
  • Proactive; able to solve issues effectively

Desirable Skills and Experience

  • Discipline relevant Degree level training or higher
  • Have worked on commercially released game titles
  • In-depth knowledge and technical proficiency in using Blender
  • Experience with non-Unity game engines (UE4 etc.)
  • Good visual development skills including storyboarding and concepting
  • Experience using other common art and 3D software packages
  • Experienced in writing scripts, such as in Python, to automate processes and support animation
